Photo Reflections on Independence Day 2023
As we gathered today in downtown Bloomington to celebrate Independence Day, it was a time for all Americans to reflect on the cherished principles that underpin our great nation – liberty, justice, and democracy. As your elected official, this occasion serves as a moving reminder of the responsibility entrusted upon me to uphold and enhance these core values in service to everyone throughout Monroe County. Here are three reflections from this day:
A Vibrant, democratic Community
Jeremy Hogan of the Bloomingtonian took this picture, and it reminds me that Bloomington is a vibrant place to live! There is so much to do, places to stay, dining for every palate and events to attend with friends and family!
Moreover, today’s parade showed how democracy plays out peacefully here in Monroe County as I walked with recent winners of primary elections including Isak Asari, Nicole Bolden, Hopi Stosberg, Kerry Thomson, and more.
A Great Place to Raise a Family
The schools here are amazing! Whether your kids are school-age like mine, or you are looking to get a world-class education at Indiana University-Bloomington, Monroe County has it!
However, we need to ensure there are homes for all families! And that’s one of the reasons I’m running, is to make sure kids like these have a place to grow, learn and thrive! That to me is justice.
A Place for All

Monroe County is a unique college town that allows residents the liberty to enjoy a multitude of careers across numerous sectors. However, we need to ensure wages support livelihoods, which we can influence through a strong workforce, a robust job market, and continued economic development.
