Kitchen Table Stewardship

Kitchen table issues—the everyday financial concerns of my family and yours—must guide public policy decisions. My focus has always been on practical fiscal management, collaboration and transparency to steward taxpayer resources against external pressures, especially in these challenging times for Monroe County's local governance and fiscal stability.
On February 25th, I moved to adopt Monroe County Resolution 2025-05, taking a stand against Indiana Senate Bill 1, which threatens to strip away local government resources; the Council in the room unanimously voted to adopt. This critical resolution represents more than a procedural measure; the County Council declares that Monroe County deserves autonomy in addressing its unique needs. Local issues require local solutions, not one-size-fits-all mandates from Indianapolis Republicans that undermine our community priorities.
Financial accountability remains a cornerstone of responsible governance. Journalist Dave Askins (welcome back!) reported concerning budget issues with the Justice Complex, revealing a significant $7 million deficit in current planning. Rather than ignoring these fiscal realities, I recognize this early warning as an opportunity. There is still time to course-correct, work with key stakeholders, and ensure this important project can proceed without burdening our taxpayers or sacrificing essential services. It also means that I am willing to cut unnecessary or harmful additions, such as the dangerous idea of placing childcare facilities anywhere near violent offenders in jail.
In the face of regressive fiscal policies at state and federal levels, I'm working with the Council, implementing robust financial safeguards for Monroe County. The current economic climate demands heightened vigilance, which is why I've championed the implementation of sound financial advice, strengthened internal controls, and increased transparency in local fiscal matters. These measures aren't merely administrative—they are essential protections for our community resources in challenging times.
My approach to county governance reflects the principles families apply at their kitchen tables: living within means, planning for the future, and protecting resources for essential needs. The courage to stand against harmful legislation like Senate Bill 1, addressing budget concerns with the Justice Complex before they become crises, and implementing strong financial controls evidences a deep commitment to responsible stewardship of resources. Taxpayer dollars in Monroe County are managed with the same anxiety, care, and consideration that Hoosiers apply to their household budgets.
